About Inaug 2005

copied from Social/Culture/ Political Issues & Stuff and www.Josephmalloy.bravehost.com

Ha! A lot to report. A great time. ANSWER Coalition did a great job securing their permit area that the govt. recinded at the last minute. This is fair treatment in America?!? Or is this jerking off and deceiving

Anyway, through their perseverance, they fought like dogs and kept their permit for bleachers, a sound stage, n system.

A very large turnout of all good americans packed the ANSWER Coalition's Anti-war/racism protest area, and they were strong, sturdy, and unwaivaible--A real sturdy click that banded together for the better good, everyone acted as one and nobody was a dick and there to be in it for themselves.

So what does your newly elected? crooked president do? As the motorcade passes in front of our section, a large blacked-out, black Suburban 1500 passes in front of the presidential limo to block the view between him and us.--That's America folks.

In response--many threw smowballs and rotten fruit at the President and his limo. Is that worse than tossing bombs and poison gasses on the innocent people of the world? Yu be the judge.

Police Response: They never knew who, if anyone, did what. The only thing they could do was join us in our permitted area. Over a dozen big mother fuckin cops suited up in mad special forces equiptment joined us in our line of protest. You know they had no proof of anything, so after a minute or two they got bored 'cause there was no one they could reason to club with theit 3 foot short bow's. They got bored n left.

SECURITY: Was a fuckin' joke. I could have packed myself full of C4 and blew up the entire block--no, i'd never personally do that--but someone else with the determination to hurt America can easily think of that. Hell, I did (and I'm not a saboteur.)

No metal detectors and no patting down below the waist. I could have strapped a dozen pipe bombs to my legs and killed a lot of people. But the only pipe I had was the one you use to smoke marijuana. Again, I'm no saboteur but I can think of that.

WHY: Why were the "security tents" and "checkpoints" ever put in place? I'll tell you why--because the government is a master magician in the illusion of security. If people have to go through checkpoints, they know they will be safe--BULLSHIT!! I just proved I could have fucked up the place royally.

AND: I was one who was kicked out after I made it through the checkpoint by some dick cop. I left, went around the block, and back through the checkpoint a second time (this time I wasn't even barely patted down and I was wearing 6 shirts to stay warm--i could have had on only 1 shirt and a chest full of semtex--but who gives a fuck!?!?) The ILLUSION of security was in place and people "thought" they were safe so that's all that matters.--Just like a good government should--provide illusions, not practicality.--Just like they always have. And nothing willl ever change...
love ya

Well, quite a good showing today. Christ though, I've never seen so many people in fur coats, staring at us, wondering who let all the riff raff in. Texans, to be sure.

I never made it to the A.N.S.W.E.R zone so I didn't see how many people were there. That was probably the biggest group. I was with the local group, DAWN. We marched to McPherson Square and then people just began moving toward the checkpoints.

A lot of us got through. My friends and I were with a group that made it to 14th and Pennsylvania, between two sets of Bushie Bleachers. My honest guess is that protesters outnumbered supporters 2-1, at least where I was.

We were vocal but non-violent. (Okay, a few objects *may* have been thrown). There was the usual chanting but for me it was the one-liners offered up by the rowdy crowd that really made it great.

Clearly not everyone got in because behind us some demonstrators were shut out and began shaking the barricades. The riot squad showed up an unleashed the pepper spray and that was the end of that. Of course we were all wishing those barricades would have come down. Then we would have had something. But of course the police always have the upper hand.

Haven't seen any media coverage. I was talking to some bank employees later and asked if the protests were shown. They said that they "showed a guy with a bandana over his face." Fucking typical.

Anyway, thanks to those of you who traveled to the city to make this happen. It was a great day. They'll do their best to brush it under the rug, aided by a complicit media, but I think it will be hard and that's what I care about most.

Not One Damn Dime Day

I'm sharing an e-mail I got. I think it's a good idea:

Bill Moyers
Please pass this on. Tell your partner, spouse, kids, mom .
. .
Let the whole country share the message.
Thursday, January 20 - Inauguration Day
------------------------------------------------------------------
Not One Damn Dime Day - Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005

Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it, Inauguration Day,Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is
"Not One Damn Dime Day" in America.

On "Not One Damn Dime Day" those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending.

During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases.
Not one damn dime for nothing for 24 hours.

On One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Wal-Mart, Kmart,
Target...Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter).

For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down. The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraqis is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their responsibility to stop it.

"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for the people of the United States of America, not for the international corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations and funnel cash into American politics.

"Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. Now 1,200 brave young Americans and (some estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a plan - a way to come home.

There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by doing nothing.

You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed.

For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our Religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people.

Please share this email with as many people as possible. Commercial speech must not be the only free speech in America!
J20 International General Strike & Bush Inauguration Day Protest (many links)

Getting through to the mainstream media about the J20 general strike
and Bush inauguration protest is essential. "Not one damn dime day"
seems to be breaking through already but we can and should do more.
Find allies and true journalists in the mainstream corporate media and
continue to forward messages to them in newer, less conventional ways.
If the mainstream press ignores this movement everyone will know it
because we are successfully spreading the word via the web, email, and
through a variety of (relatively) mainstream progressive media outlets.
This time around any lack of coverage will be glaring because we are
building so many alternative information networks (that are spreading
the j20 general strike/protest message) in an historically
unprecedented manner. Even through word of mouth (over talk radio) we
can literally call Bush's "mandate" into question if enough people are
ready to stand up, speak out, and strike -- and many obviously are.
The viral idea may be coming into it's own. Cut, paste, forward, and
repeat the best of everyone's ideas with minimal effort and everyone
can make a difference. Just the volume of protest information will be a
story and then the protest will be too.
In closing, more time-tested cliches may be in order...
If not now, when?
If not you, who?
If you don't foment revolution you can't complain.

R wrote:
> PLEASE FORWARD EVERYWHERE!
>
> Blockade the imperial procession.
> Independent Media Converges to Cover Bush Inauguration
>
> We are contacting you as an important member of the independent
> media community to ask you to participate in, support or promote
> independent media coverage of the upcoming presidential inauguration
> in January.
>
> From Jan. 10 through Jan. 24, independent media makers will converge
> in the nation's capital to provide continuous coverage of the
> inauguration through video, photography, radio, print, and web
> postings.
>
> We are a group of independent media makers in Washington, DC that
> has formed to help facilitate and coordinate coverage of the
> inauguration.
>
> For more information, please visit our website at
> www.inaugurationmedia.org. A list of our needs follows at the end
> of this letter, along with information on how to join out listserves.
>
> Information about specific media projects during the inauguration
> will be available on our website in the coming weeks.
>
> If you are in the DC area or coming to town for the inauguration,
> we ask you to contact us to help coordinate independent media
> coverage.
>
> We intend to provide a media workspace with broadband Internet
> access, telephones, a limited number of computers for public use
> and Internet radio facilities. Although we will appreciate and
> request donations for use of the space, no one who legitimately
> wants to use the space to create independent media will be turned
> away.
>
> If you cannot come to Washington for the inauguration, please help
> promote and distribute the independent media that is produced. For
> example, post a link to our website on your site.
>
> Repost or re-air content produced during the inauguration. Use
> whatever forum you have to discuss and promote the independent media
> produced during the inauguration. Share this letter and the existence
> of our media center with your readership, listenership, viewership,
> fellow journalists, photographers, filmmakers, and writers. Also,
> consider sponsoring a trip to Washington for someone else who wishes
> to create media.
>
> Finally, we ask everyone to review the list of needs at the end of
> this letter and help us however you can.
>
> This year's election was won by a razor thin margin.
>
> Indeed, almost half of those who voted did not vote for Bush. The
> same was true of the last election. Despite this, the mainstream
> media provided almost no coverage of the protests and general dissent
> surrounding the 2000 inauguration. We do not want this situation
> to occur again, and we are determined to use our voices and the
> voices of others around the world to ensure that independent messages
> are heard.
>
> The success of delivering these messages depends upon how much unity
> we can create in the world of independent media. One person acting
> alone is one voice. Acting together, we are many voices, and can
> General Strike - USA author: Fed Up General Strike Thursday January
> 20, 2005 Inauguration Day
>
> Show George II, "The W", how much we support his reign, by supporting
> a General Strike on Thursday, January 20, 2005.
>
> We must show the world that we are not satisfied with "black box"
>
> voting, where there is no paper trail of the votes cast. Over 8,000
> votes in precincts of less than 700, voting machines counting
> backwards, misallocating the votes from Kerry to Bush. Dozens and
> dozens of instances of unquestionable vote fraud aided and abetted
> by Republicans both in the Corporate world and the Political.
>
> We must show that "We the People of the united States of America"
>
> are out here, are sovereign, and that we will no longer stand by
> while our basic rights and liberties are ripped away from us like
> bloody swatches of skin.
>
> A "General Strike" means:
>
> No Economic Activity Whatsoever for examples (list not all
inclusive):
>
> =B7 NO WORKING =B7 No buying gas =B7 No buying food =B7 No fast
> food =B7 No paying bills =B7 No use of US Postal Service =B7 No
> movies, Pay-Per-View, or video game rentals =B7 No taking public
> transportation =B7 No paying of tolls (bridge, turnpike, etc.)
>
> If we all, those who do NOT support the regime of George W. Bush
> (et al), stay away from any economic activity on Inauguration Day,
> we will hurt his supporters in the most significant way - in their
> pocket books!
>
> Imagine, millions and millions of folks missing work, holding
> rallies, and not spending a dime that day (!!!). OhMyGod, the sky
> will fall!
>
> Repooplicans mobbing DC for the festivities, depending on the
> 'plebes' to be there serving them, and on Inauguration Day, everyone
> is marching to a different drum! Who will wipe their - - noses? Or
> gather laurels for them to rest upon?
>
> Of course, a person needing medical attention, or ongoing care (i.e.
>
> dialysis) is exempted.
>
> Otherwise, we need to Shut the Country Down on Inauguration Day!
> Get your family, your friends, your co-workers - women, men, black,
> brown, WHATEVER! It doesn't matter your background; if you value
> your freedom, and want to resist the fascists who are taking control,
> STRIKE!
>
> Strike! Strike! Strike! Strike! Strike! Strike!
> Depending on the number of participants in your city, two or more
> flashmobs could descend on various locations and then converge with
> the main counter-inaugural protest (before moving elsewhere).
>
> Esso/Exxon/Mobil provides an internationally unifying group of

As a veteran of DC protests I can tell you that this administration, the DC police, and the media are highly adept at marginalizing voices of dissent. They can make a crowd of half a million angry citizens look like a half a dozen freaks. They know what they're doing and they do it well.

Based on prior experience, here's how I envision January 20th going down. In the morning you will arrive curbside. The police will be very nice and tell you you're not allowed to be there. They will politely direct you to the sections of the street where you are allowed to stand. You will then cram in with all the other dutiful protesters where 90% of you will be invisible. That evening the media will report that a "handful of protesters failed to dampen the joyous atmosphere" and they will show footage of cheering Bush supporters followed by some lone kid with a bandana over his face trying to light a flag on fire. Forgive my cynicism by I've seen it happen over and over.

A.N.S.W.E.R is trying to address this concern by urging people to arrive on Pennsylvania Avenue before 9:00AM and line the streets and refuse to move. That's a good idea and maybe it will succeed, but I have a strong feeling the police will be there to re-locate us. Refusing to move is an option but that will only work if our numbers are large enough.

If we get a good, long curbside presence, then maybe turning our backs will be effective. But let's not allow ourselves to be crammed into a "free speech zone," or pushed back from the curb where no one can see us. Remember, if 200,000+ people all move at once to where we're not allowed (like straight up Pennsylvania Avenue) they won't be able to stop us and people will bloody well take notice.

I'm tired of these massive but well-behaved protests getting absolutely no attention. For the sake of the country, please let's not go quietly on this one.

My friends and I are organizing(If we can get along the parade route) a protest where we moon the parade, Our arses will have witty protest phrases across them. "You want to go to the moon? you got it!"

I'm ceratin there will be plenty writing about being fucked.

And whatever else , they can come up with. This protest is far more immature than the "turn your back" movement, but I feel setting the guiness book of world records for most mooners could be a nice thing. :D

Just an FYI-

You may have heard of the Protest Warriors already, but I figured that a good old heads up couldn't hurt.

I am a student at the University of Texas in Arlington and a member of the Student Peace Action Network. We held a 'No Voter Left Behind' protest Nov 1, and protested Bush speaking at SMU. All day we encountered these "warriors." They will bring signs of thier own (ie- "Let's all smoke pot at a gay wedding; Vote Kerry") to any protest, siting thier own right to free speech and will pretty much just try to undermine all our efforts and credibility. Some members of the Dallas Peace Center told me they deal with the warriors on a regular basis and that they have a history of violence. I didn't see any violence at our event, but I could not observe everything. There have been a few unconfirmed fight reports, though.
They've already got information about International Answer's 1/20 protest on thier forum but I don't think they've gotten thier mitts on 'Turn Your Back.' If we don't carry signs; they can't. And thier opposing signs are pretty much all they've got.

So be careful, be smart, and keep an eye out for these guys, they might be bas news.

Die-In

I thought I would make a new thread for the Die-In disscussion.
I think it is an effective way to get the point accross, and would like to partisipate in one at the DC protests. But, sinse I have never been to DC, I don't know the geography of the city, So I don't know that I could be a leading organizer for one.
Here is what should be done to pull it off (Feel free to add more!):
1. Create a website to promote it.
2. Create Fliers for the days leading up to Jan 20th to pass out at other demonstrations.
3. Find out the place, date (Jan 20th?) and time it will occur.

More thoughts....

What Form/Shape Will The Protest Take?

There's no doubt about it....people from all around the country representing different political perspectives will want to participate in the historical protest. Labor, women's groups, lock-down-and-get-arrested folks, representatives of minority groups, dems, soccer moms, the whole spectrum will want to show up and demonstrate. There's a group supporting the "turn your back on bush" approach, which sounds great, but I think being right upfront and obvious with the protest makes more sense.

I think the more comprehensive the demonstration is the better because it will draw from a larger, wider spectrum.
